The Importance of Aftercare Care For Hair Transplant Patients

March 30, 2022

After going through a professional procedure to restore healthy hair follicles and strands, hair transplant care makes a huge difference in the recovery process. Although transplantation has become much more common and high-tech these days, your scalp still needs time to heal if you want to enjoy a healthy, lush head of hair in the future. It helps to know what to expect before you come into the office for the transplant appointment.

The less invasive nature of FUE hair transplants makes aftercare easier than ever before. However, it is important to follow all the recommendations to prevent transplant failure, infection, or other issues. If you have any questions at all, ask the professional who provides the service at the Hero Institute at any time. Also, be sure to attend any follow-up appointments.

Hair Transplant Care – Avoiding Infection

First of all, it is important to understand that it takes time for your new hair to grow. Do not expect a full and lush head of hair immediately after the transplant procedure. You will receive a detailed explanation to help you take care of your scalp and follicles in the first week after surgery. If the transplant team gives you any specific instructions based on your medical history or the completed procedure, make sure you follow them exactly for best results.

While individuals heal at different rates, most of the process occurs in the first five days. After all, these are not huge surgical incisions or large wounds on your scalp. The most important thing is to avoid infection and facilitate the healing process. This may include oral antibiotics, but a sterile saline spray applied to the scalp will help greatly.

Give Your Scalp Time to Heal

Any medical procedure heals more quickly if you get sufficient rest. The week after your hair transplant procedure is not the time to participate in sports or spend all night dancing at the clubs. Absolutely avoid swimming in natural bodies of water or pools. Do not do any high intensity workouts. Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking. Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet to speed up the process and help your scalp heal more quickly. You will also have to resist scratching your new hair and your scalp during the first week or so.

After Initial Healing in Hair Transplant Care

Near the end of the first week, the hair follicle incisions will scab over and begin to return to normal appearance. Start washing your hair and scalp gently (check out this video) to remove the scabs, dry skin, and any accumulated dirt and oils. You may still experience scabbing, swelling, and extra redness two or more weeks after the hair transplant procedure. You may still not see new hair growth during this period, so do not worry that the transplantation failed to work. Remain patient, use gentle shampoos, avoid harsh products of any type, and enjoy looking in the mirror to see the first new growth of thick hair appear.

You deserve a strong, healthy, and full head of hair, and we can help you achieve it.
