WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON CAUSE FOR HAIR LOSS IN MEN?
Hair loss can result from a variety of disorders that prompt many to seek medical advice. The most prevalent condition is Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), which affects men worldwide. This condition, commonly known as “male pattern baldness,” is characterized by progressive hair loss typically occurring in the crown area, the forehead region, and the upper head. Understanding AGA and its treatments is crucial for those experiencing hair thinning or loss.
HOW FREQUENT IS IT?
Male androgenetic alopecia is a disorder that begins after puberty and worsens with age. The severity of it may vary depending on race or ethnicity. Generally, 20% of men under 20 will suffer from it; 50%-60% of those aged 50 will have it; and up to 90% of them will be affected by the age of 70.
WHY DOES IT OCCUR?
Male pattern baldness is a medical condition that affects susceptible areas of the scalp. It causes hair follicles to miniaturize (shrink) until they become permanently non-existent. Basically two factors lead to AGA:
- Androgen levels in the body.
- Genetic predisposition.
Androgen levels in the body:
Unsurprisingly, male alopecia begins to develop at puberty, right when androgen levels increase in the body. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the androgen responsible for damage to hair follicles.
Genetic predisposition:
Numerous studies have shown that men whose fathers suffer from AGA are five times more likely to develop it themselves, compared to those whose father don’t suffer from it.
There are other factors that cause androgenetic alopecia, such as prostaglandin molecules and kinases proteins. Although the effects of these molecules in AGA are not well understood, some new treatments are being developed to diminish those effects.
HOW IS ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA MANIFESTED?
Male pattern baldness is characterized by the gradual miniaturization of hair follicles, leading to a noticeable reduction in hair density on the upper part of the head. Over time, hair thickness progressively decreases.
In addition to hair thinning, some patients may experience itching, which could be related to inflammation around the hair follicles or associated conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff.
